Flash Photography

Define the following terms and use the below criteria:

1) you must be sure to put every term into your own words such that you can explain it to me without notes.
2) most of the terms, if not all, can be illustrated with a picture, so please do that on your blog.
3) finish this by Sunday at midnight

Key Light- the main light that defines the shape of the subject. It can be hard(focused) or soft(diffused)
 
Fill- a light used to lessen the contrast of a scene and lighten some shadows
 
Hair light- used to give the hair texture and make it stand out from the background.
 
Kicker- accents the edges of the subject.

Rembrandt Light- a lighting technique used in studio lighting, using two sources of light, usually a key light and a fill. It's characteristic is a triangle of light below the subject's eye on the less illuminated side.
 
Hatchet Light- A shadow that runs straight down the center of the face. Achieved by using a key light and very little fill or edge lighting. Creates dramatic effect.
 
 
Loop Light- known for the loop-like shadow it creates under the subject's nose.
 


Paramount/Butterfly Light- the key light is placed high and the fill right under it, used as a "glamour lighting."
 
Sidelight- the light source comes from one side of the subject, while the other side is left in darkness. changing the height of the light can make a more dramatic effect.
 

Backlight- the light is placed behind the subject, and facing toward the camera. Usually used in a 4 point lighting set up. It illuminates the edges of the subject, while other areas are darker.
 

Hot Lights- a light that lets off heat.
 
Cool Light- a light that doesn't let off heat. Made of a row of LED lights, lets off the same effect as a hot light but without the heat.
 
Monolights- a self contained flash unit that uses its own power.
 
Studio Flash Systems- two types: pack and head or monolight. different components of flashes put together.
 
Snoot- a tube that controls the beam of light from a flash.
 
Soft Box- a tool to diffuse the light, either by making it pass through something or reflect off something.
 
Umbrella- a tool that absorbs light
 
Shoot Though Umbrella- a tool that the light passes through, diffusing it and making it "soft".
 
Gobo- short for "Go Between" is a filter placed in front of the light source to control the shape of the light.
 
Reflector- a reflective material that deflects the light.
 
Bare Bulb Flash- straight flash without anything to relfect or diffuse it.

Flash Ratio- a way to describe the mix between natural light and the light from a flash.
 
Flash Meter- a tool to measure the mix of ambient and flash light.
